Asahi Refining USA Commissions New Silver Refinery Built for Energy Efficiency
November 03.26
Asahi Refining USA announced the opening of its new silver refinery. The facility introduces new refining cells with enhanced electrolytic efficiency, meaning each tonne of silver now requires 270 kWh less power during the refining process.
“To meet future needs, we required a modern facility that would improve safety, efficiency, quality, and environmental performance. The refinery we are opening today reflects our long-term commitment to this business, our customers, and the State of Utah.” explained Tomonobu Furuta, President of Asahi Refining USA. “More than ten engineers from Japan worked alongside our local engineers, operations team, and EHS team. Through dedication, technical expertise, and teamwork, they overcame numerous challenges and turned this vision into reality. This refinery stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when talented people work together toward a common goal.”
Beyond energy savings, the new design reduces manual handling requirements by around 75%. Designed by a team of Asahi Refining engineers, the refinery improves material flow, minimizes waste and brings equipment up to modern standards.
“Our teams set out to build a refinery that is safer, cleaner and more efficient from the ground up,” said Deric Rust, Director of Operations at Asahi Refining USA. “The new refining cells use less energy, and the improved layout means our staff spend far less time on manual handling. It’s a better workplace and a better process.”
The project supported the local economy over the last 3 years. Asahi Refining USA has emphasized local spending wherever possible, with more than 60% of the project budget going to local contractors and suppliers.
“Through continued investment, innovation, and operational excellence, we aim to strengthen our contribution to the industry and the communities we serve.” Mr. Furuta said in closing. “This new silver refinery is an important step in that journey.”
